This morning early I meet Toe at the east end of Dump Marsh to look for Clapper Rail and Sparrows. As we were sloping through the mud in the dark, swatting at Deerfly and trying not to inhale no-see-ms I asked if he had ever heard or seen Clapper Rail here.

No , but the habitat is perfect for them

I mumbled a bit as we walked about a half mile and heard something. Then shortly the sun started to rise and we saw a Clapper Rail fly a few feet ahead of us. Toe insisted it was a Clapper Rail, I wanted to look at the guide to make sure the color was correct before I would be convinced. The guide was at in the van, anyway I wasn t satisfied that I had seen a Clapper Rail.

After a while looking for the bird we headed southwest looking for sparrows hoping not to step on a snake or a gator. Then Toe pointed to a whole in the grass. I looked and there was a Clapper Rail looking as if it had never seen anything like us.

I took a couple of photos, thanked Toe for finding my Dade County & Year Clapper Rail. We continued looking for sparrows without much luck. We saw one Savannah. We did however see a small mixed flock of wintering birds.
