I took a small group of TNC folks from across the country on their first ENP visit this morning. After parting company around 11:45, I checked out the Cutler Wetlands area. The number of birds has decreased significantly in the last couple of weeks. Could the 85 degree weather have caused the birds to migrate back north? Anyway, there were some cool sightings. Here are the highlights:

Savannah Sparrows (hundreds at dawn southwest of Lucky Hammock)

Great White Heron (usual place at Taylor Slouth)

American Bittern (usual place at Anhinga Trail)

Least Bittern (not so usual place at Anhinga Trail)

White-tailed Kite (usual place on Research Rd.)

Roseate Spoonbills (usual place at Paurotis Pond)

Wood Duck (not the usual place flying over Lucky Hammock, but heading towards usual place west of the Annex)

Western Kingbird (3 west of Lucky H. at tree line; one at Flynn's

Scissor-tailed Flycatcher (not the usual place behind prime outlets shops, FL City.)

Bald Eagle (usual place at Cutler Wetlands)

Gadwall (flying over Cutler Wetlands; landed in the far end)

Franklin's Gull (usual place in large flock in lake east of Cutler W.)

Lesser Black-backed Gull (same place as Franklin's)

Wilson's Snipe (usual place at Cutler Wetlands)

Common Tern (not the usual time or place over lake east of Cutler W.)

Ring-necked Ducks (usual place in same lake as the gulls)

I tried for the Short-eared Owl at dawn with no luck. The field where it was first seen has been planted, as has the SW field next to the tree line. I didn't see any Harriers in this area either, so I wonder if the change in the field has spooked both the Harriers and the Owl.
