I busted it up the Green Stamp (the Florida Turnpike) late Thrusday morning on a mini raptor quest. Between the 595 Tangle and the Commercial exit I picked off a few ospreys and a red-tailed. Just as I passed Fern Forest I glimpsed of a small, dark buteo of uncertain identity.

At the Atlantic Boulevard exit I saw flotilla of waterfowl in the borrow pit and pulled into the parking lot to glass them. They turned out to be fifty or so ring-necked ducks.

The west heading on Atlantic produced a few kestrels and little else.

Arthur Marshall was slower than usual except for some heard red-shoulders and a pair of ospreys. I was just about to leave when a pair vultures came in low over the old visitor s center and I picked out short-tailed flying with them.

The drive south was detoured to Wakodahatchee which only had the regulars today.

The Turnpike south from Delray produced a few ospreys and I picked up another fish hawk at my work site.

Isn t the TAS a marvel? I had been vainly searching for a Buteo brachyurus for decades. I got my lifer short-tailed hawk on the TAS South Dade Birding Trip October 13. I got another with John and Cole of Hawk Watch International at Curry Hammock and finally get to identify one on my own at Loxahatchee NWR. All of this happened in less than thirty days. Thanks guys, you made it possible.
