We headed to Lucky Hammock early this morning in hopes to find some sparrows with some advice from Toe. We observed a couple of different sparrow species and we were absolutely delighted. I left Angel to get something in the car I had forgotten, as I was on my way back walking to the field to met him across from Lucky fixing my bino straps on my lefthand side just a few feet away I flushed out a possible Yellow-headed Blackbird that quickly retreated into the vegetation...it was like nothing I had ever seen before a bright yellow light bulb head with black body and called a rich croak sound as it disappeared deep into the vegetation. I stood there a few minutes trying to relocate him but without success so I went to find Angel. Needless to say we never saw it again but plan to return in the morning to try our luck once more on relocating the YH Blackbird as well as the possible Song Sparrow sighted today. We added a few lifer sparrow (thanks Toe!) among being treated to a fly over of a flock of Sandhill Crane. We also observed an immature Bald Eagle flying overhead and hundreds of Turkey Vulture circling the beautiful blue skies with only one Black Vulture in the mix. There were swallows working the fields throughout the morning. After our awesome morning at Lucky we headed to Everglades NP for a bit before calling it a day.
At the Everglades we were treated to an awesome flyover of an amazing Snail Kite. We had a good time watching the Hummingbird war by the Visitor's Center and also some great upclose looks at a Yellow-throated Warbler eating lunch. Here is a list of today's birds:
