I stopped by the "Green Turtle neighborhood" in Islamorada on my way home from the Hawk Watch today and quickly noticed a loud sharp call note being repeated a viney tangle near the road. I recognized it from my days out west and knew I had to get a look at it. Luckily I was able to pish the bird out for a few quick views allowing me to confirm that it was a MacGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER. I was able to clearly see that the bird was a stocky warbler with bright yellow underparts, a gray head, pale whitish gray throat, and thick white eye arcs. The call note was quite different from that of Mourning Warbler. Soon the bird flew off toward some houses and I wasn't able to relocate it in about 20 minutes of searching. If you want to look for the bird head south on US 1 through Islamorada and turn onto the old highway at the Green Turtle (mm 81.5). Continue south and past Parker Dr to the large overgrown lot on the right. I located the bird under the first large tree on your right as you enter the field. It was last seen flying toward US 1 at about 5:20PM.

Good luck if you go.
