The Catholic parish of Mary Help of Christians owns 24 acres located in the Northeast quadrant of the intersection of Sawgrass and University drive. The picture shows the property when it was being developed in 1996.

The area referred to as Hoechoka Hammock (actually the plat name) is the wooded area on the right side of the picture that runs north along the canal (SFWMD). The white "sand" entrance is still there as is the picnic area but the hammock proper has since matured into quite an atrractive area. There are over 195 native species of vines, orchids, ground cover, bushes, trees, cacti and bromeliad. Also quite a number of atayla hairsteaks thanks to Roger Hammer. Coontie are a bit ragged if you catch my drift.

Feeders are about the Hammock and Garden area and the trails into the Hammock proper are spacious. There are many benches to sit upon and also viewing platforms for comfort and shade. Squirrel, raccoons, fox, armadilla, and O'possum are present. Snakes are all non-poisonous. Usually black racers and rat snakes. The hawks prey upon the dove in the vicinity of the green tent by the pitcher pump.

Park your cars on the first "green grass island" and walk in. Remember this is also a field study area for pre-school and elementary school children so if you want early morning viewing come in before 7:30-8:00. The members of the Land Stewardship committee are generally there at sunset/dusk.
