My apologies. Your first posting mentioned bushes and therefore I made an incorrect assumption. The gnatcatchers are indeed almost gone, even so I still heard one in that area around the same time you were there. I myself have birded that area (and an adjacent one next to the cornfields) since John started posting his sightings and seen most of the birds he has mentioned.
I'll give it one more try: since your second posting mentioned the birds staying low in the grasses I'm going to suggest that they may have been grasshopper sparrows. I've spotted them before but I'm not entirely familiar with their call. Hopefully John can be of more help here.
