Sorry, no photos. My hands were too cramped up from paddling aganst the current to fool with a camera after we got out. The beetle appeared to be genus Buprestis. Main colors were actually green and gold, with what looked like pigmented dots of bright red on the front of the head. The one I had in hand had fairly stout mandibles, with which he tried to bite me, but couldn't get a grip on my wet fingers.
