On Monday I saw a flock of 12 flamingos in Snake Bight in Everglades National Park. This required paddling a canoe about 5 miles east of Flamingo to the northeastern portion of the Bight, not far from Porpoise Point.

The entire shoreline of Snake Bight was very birdy: I saw good numbers of BN Stilts, PB Grebes, BW Teal, and Skimmers, plus the usual assortment of waders, shorebirds, gulls & terns. The whole place has a very wild, Caribbean feel.

If you go, get an early start to avoid fighting the wind. Also watch the water levels in the western part of Snake Bight. East winds and falling tides can suck you into impassable flats. It's best to get around the flats by paddling further to the south. And, of course, check the forecast first. There's nothing like getting caught in a thunderstorm in the middle of nowhere!
