An eclectic group of twenty (20) birders joined the Tropical Audubon Society s Field Trip to Bill Baggs State Park on Cape Florida on Sunday, September 16, 2007. The walk was dedicated to our late friend and birder extraordinaire, Juan Villamil, whose last TAS field trip was at this site on this date last year. The temperature hovered in the mid-80 s, but our ocean breezes made the birding quite comfortable. Albeit - far from a fallout there was a nice mixture of fall migrants. Thirty-eight (38) species were seen including eleven (11) warbler species. Other interesting sightings were several Giant Ameivas (Ameiva ameiva), a male Tropical Checkered-Skipper (Pyrgus oileus) and a female Black and Yellow Argiope (Argiope aurantia). The following birds were seen. I may have missed a few.
Brown Pelican
Double-crested Cormorant
Magnificent Frigatebird
Snowy Egret
White Ibis
Osprey
Cooper s Hawk
Red-shouldered Hawk
Merlin
Laughing Gull
Royal Tern
White-crowned Pigeon
Eurasian Collared-Dove
Common Ground Dove
Mourning Dove
Red-bellied Woodpecker
Eastern Wood Pewee
Great Crested Flycatcher
Western Kingbird (seen by one birder)
Red-eyed Vireo
Barn Swallow
Blue Jay
Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Northern Mockingbird
Northern Parula
Chestnut-sided Warbler
Magnolia Warbler
Cape May Warbler
Black-throated Blue Warbler
Prairie Warbler
American Redstart
Prothonotary Warbler
Ovenbird
Common Yellowthroat
Hooded Warbler
Northern Cardinal
Boat-tailed Grackle
Common Grackle

A Dark and Stormy, an elixir consisting of Gosling s Black Seal Rum, a dark Bermudan Rum and Reed s Ginger Beer (Jamaican), was hoisted in memory of Juan. Life is good..................... especially when birding in beautiful South Florida.
