I stopped this afternoon to make yet one more attempt at the Swainson's Warbler at Matheson Hammock. I found Feliper's 2-second Swainson's on the same trail, but a bit farther down. After that, I walked the service road and met up with Will and Jody, two birders I just met last week at Cutler Wetlands. While I was checking out some warbler movement, Will points out a raptor soaring to the northwest. When I put my binocs on it I was shocked to see a beautiful Mississippi Kite! The bird came around for several passed before continuing to the east. Wouldn't you know it, I've spent years looking for this species in Dade County but I had to go to Gainesville to get my lifer this summer. Now that I no longer need this on my life list, I see one in my backyard, so to speak. Best way to find a bird: don't look for it!
I'm not complaining, the MS Kite is a great bird. Migration, however, is still slow.
