I observed a bird yesterday of which I'm still undercertain of it's I.D.. I looked through several field guides but am still perplexed. The nearest I come is a possible immature male Red-Winged Blackbird. The bird was 8-9 inches length, basically black, (black head, belly, breast, tail, primary, secondary wings and legs) but had a very dark brown mantle and nape with a buffy-slightly orange edging to the feathers in this area. No markings were noted anywhere else and the dark eyes and bill looked like the Red-Wing Blackbirds. The tail appeared somewhat short, but maybe because the bird was immature. The small sliver of epaulets showing showed no red or yellow and matched the edged feathers. I'm just wondering about the dark brown mantle and nape area. Any info would be appreciated.
