While it's true minks are locally common in Big Cypress and the Fakahatchee, they are thought to be absent from Hendry and northern Collier counties (based on the range map in vol I of "Rare and Endangered Biota of Florida").

The corresponding range map for Long-tailed Weasel does extend into western Hendry and northern Collier. However, the book also states there is only one record south of L. Okeechobee, which makes the range map suspect.

In other words, either would be quite rare where we saw the animal.

I thought it was too small for a mink. It was also seemed rather light for a mink, although I'm uncertain how much variation in color in there is among minks. (I've only seen one wild one, on Loop Rd., and it was very dark.)
