After driving down to Chekika, it turned out the entrance gate was locked yesterday. However, I spotted up to ten Common Nighthawks perched on dead trees on both 168th street and s.w. 237th ave. Two of these were perched within eight feet of the edge of the road and about ten feet up from the ground. I stoped my car right beside them to look and they didn't flinch. I also had very good looks at five Red-shouldered Hawks, also perching. Many swallows were in the area, possibly Tree Swallows but I'm not sure. There is a section on s.w. 168th street that is unpaved (about a mile detour) right now due to road repairs. I first spotted the first nighthawk on 168th street about a mile before the intersection of 168th st. and 237th ave. The majority were located soon after making a left from 168th st. onto 237th ave.(at a S shaped area in the road). Be aware that this road eventually becomes a one lane road and unpaved quite a few miles down.
