I work downtown at the Historical Museum, where one of our treasures is the first (also called Elephant Folio) edition of Audubon's Birds of America. The Flamingo print is usually not on display, but in honor of this occasion I will put it in the Audubon exhibit starting today and for the next few weeks. After you have gazed upon the real thing, come visit us. (Directions to the museum: http://www.hmsf.org/about-visit-museum.htm) A number of even earlier artists also saw and drew the flamingo, including an anonymous artist who sailed with Sir Francis Drake in the 1500s, John White in 1585 (father of Virginia Dare, first English baby born in North America) and William Catesby, an 18th century naturalist who spent time in Florida and the Bahamas.
