I have been visiting the Ft Myers Beach area the past week. Iv'e been to North Lake Park, a very nice Park. We saw numerous Snowy White Egrets, many Tri-colored Herons, Little Blue Herons among others. At Bowditch Point park this a.m. I saw a bied which best fits the description of a Common Loon. It was on the beach laying down about three feet from the waters edge. When it got up it did not walk in a normal manner, but propelled itself forward with two very large and long webbed feet. It's color was basically brown on top and somewhat lighter underneath. In Sibley's Field Guide it mentions the immature Commom Loon being of grayish coloration so I'm not certain of the I.D.. This afternoon I visited Tigertail Beach. It was almost full low tide. Many Black Skimmers were foraging constanly over the sand flats coming within 25 ft. of me. They were real beauties. I saw millions of brilliantly colored Fiddler Crabs as I walked along the shoes edge; purple, white, orange and red shells with designs on their backs. I didn't see the small shores birds like the plovers, sandpipers that I had seen last time. However I was only able to stay there about 30 min. and maybe I can return for a longer trip before leaving. Overall I'm seeing less birds than in previous years here. I noted about 30 pelicans at Bowditch Point Park and about 20 Royal terns there . The largest group of Roseate Spoon-bills was 16 at Bunche Park. Marbled Godwits,Willets,Short-billed Dowitchers and a plover (not sure of I.D.) were seen there. We saw next to nothing on a ride around J.N. Darling Wildlife Sanctuary at Sannibel. Eagle Lakes park had many Brown-headed Cowbirds, but the Wetland area was almost dried up. Well thats enough for now.
