No umbrella is necessary; the area around the roost is surprisingly clean. Earlier in the season the Purple Martins arrival at the roost was more prolonged and birds that were sitting in the trees or power lines would often take to the air hundreds at a time. When this occurred a few audible plops from feces hitting the pavement could be heard. Lately, the birds have been landing later at the roost and while there are more of them, they are less likely to take to the air again and letting go. This time of the year I always keep an umbrella handy but it s not because of the birds.
