This evening we went to Loxahatchee NWR to watch the birds come in to roost. Hundreds of Egrets, Herons and Ibis flew in to the canal at the end of Lee Rd. A big surprise was the number of Snail Kites that flew in, 24!!!! For 20 minutes form 8:05 - 8:25 we watched them fly in from the east and south in groups from 2-5. We observed them 2 years back doing this but only in numbers of 8-10 total. The could be seen just down the signed Canoe Trail at the end of Lee Rd. and seen best from the area the canoes are stored. We saw 2 Snail Kites earlier in the day near the entrance to Loxahatchee at Lee Rd. and 441. In April we had 3 on Boynton Beach Blvd. between 441 and the turnpike, working the canals along the road. Also on this visit to FL we saw all 3 Great Blue Herons in Flamingo, with a Wurdemann's near the boat ramps, a White along the inland waterway going under the main roadway and a regular blue behind Eco Pond.

Good birding, Chris Takacs
