It was about fifty feet in front of us, stayed in view about twenty seconds on the road and maybe a minute in the grass before moving off. I did not see a collar but, well, it was dark out. I didn't cut the engine, but I did put the car in park. The panther was very large, as big as the subspecies would grow to.
