I had a similar experience last Saturday, June 9th, while fishing in the Miami Springs Optimist Club 6th Annual Dolphin Tournament. The fishing was really slow - we only caught five schoolies. The birding was also uneventful. There were aproximately Twenty to Thirty Bridled Terns, One juvenile Brown Booby and one Audubon's Shearwater. Magnificent Frigatebirds, which follow schools of feeding dolphin and tuna, were in good supply, but were soaring too high to be of any help. We fished a couple miles southeast of Fowey Light to due east of downtown Miami. The sargassum was very scattered with more weed, flotsam and jetsam being seen in Biscayne Bay due to the recent strong offshore winds. Life is good....... seeing an adult Manatee with no prop scars feeding on the grasses along the bank of the Red Road Canal in Miami Lakes yesterday, after leaving my office. This was at the intersection of N.W. 142 St. and N.W. 57th Avenue.I cannot believe that the State of Florida has recently downgraded the status of this beautiful animal from endangered to threatened! I see many more marinas in our future. Any Smooth-billed Ani reports of late?
