Toe- I think you have the right solution. Someone just needs to see the birds to verify.
Have the birds been vocal? Would that not be one way to ID them?
The Audubon guide does mention that they go to the Gulf Coast occasionally. Is it possible that this tropical storm ( Barry) blew them over to the Atlantic side?
I don't think we should rule out the possibility that Mr Sprecher did in fact see vermillions!
