I have my Martain house about 15' high with 4 gourds dangling from the 4 bottom corners. Martains like open spaces for their house so they can swoop right into their compartments. In the south, the Martains don't seem to be as fussy about the size of the open space as they do up north.
A good place to start learning about Martins and getting a house or gourds is from the Purple Martin Conservation Association at purplemartin.org Let me know if you need any more info.
