This sunday, about 3pm, I positively identified a Masked Booby at 12th street and the ocean in South Beach. The bird moves up and down the beach (at VERY close range)- in the 2 hours I was sunbathing it passed by several times. Amazingly it dived into the water within several feet of people swimming- at times only 10-20 feet from shore. The bird is an immature, dark above and lighter below. Also I saw it resting on the water, something Masked does frequently. Earlier this week (Tuesday) I thought I saw the same species (from far off), at Cape Florida while searching (in vain) for the Bahama Mockingbird. One more thing- I couldn't find the Glossy Starlings in Dania Beach, but there is a pair of House Finches behind the gas station on the west side of A-1-A. the male is an orange-headed variant.
