Nancy Freedman and I did our NAMC in the keys from Card Sound to Big Pine. We found 71 species (including 12 warblers) totalling 1835 individuals (281 warblers).

Stopping to try to ID the large numbers of warblers slowed us down. Most that were seen flying across the road remained unidentified. We dipped on Mangrove Cuckoo, finding only Yellow-billed at Key Largo Hammocks SP. It was nice to see a male Sanderling in breeding plumage at Sea Oats Beach (Lower Matecumbe). All of the other peeps were at least partially in breeding plumage, as were some (but not all) Dowitchers and Black-bellied Plovers. A late Kingfisher (female) at Lake Edna on Grassy Key was a surprise, as were the Grebe and Coot at Blue Hole (Big Pine) and a singing Carolina Wren near Carysfort Circle (Key Largo). The Burrowing Owls (including youngsters) were all at the Sombrero Country Club (Marathon). We did not see any at Key Colony Beach golf course and did not try Sombrero Beach. The Antillean Nighthawks at the Marathon airport were already calling at the west end of the airport when we arrived at 7:05pm. A jet took off right over us, but it didn't seem to bother the nighthawks.
