Hi Alex,
It's great to see an active teen birder, especially on the east side of Dade County! The smartest thing you could do is to join Tropical Audubon and go on their walks, which happen just about every Saturday, and once spring gets here, will be mostly local. Your main problem will be getting a ride, but, hey, if your mon wants to come, maybe you can get her interested, too. Most of the birds on your wish list will come easily that way.
For your current information: Castellow Hammock is on sw 162 Ave (farmlife road) between 216 and 232 streets. "Flynn's" is at sw 112 Ave(no sign) just north of the road to the main entrance to Everglades NP. Lucky Hammock is about one quarter mile east of the entrance to the park, and a block south. Look for a gate overgrown with vines and a sign to a Youth Camp as you are driving to the Park.
It's a shame that there are not many good birding spots in your immediate vicinity. In the spring and fall Enchanted Forest Park at nw 135th st and 19th Ave is the best you will do. On a really good day you can get some migrants there, but it's not a hot spot. At least it's relatively safe. Good luck. 235 is a darn good lifelist for 14.
: Currently, I have 235 birds on my lifelist. I live in Miami Shores, and am probably going to join the Tropical Audubon sometime soon. I am looking for some good birding spots in the Miami area. I have many birds that I want to see:
: Blue-headed Vireos, dunlin, rough-winged swallow, anis, mangrove cuckoo, pine warbler, magnolia warbler, northern waterthrushes, western kingbird, cassins kingbird, least flycatcher, scissor-tailed flycatcher, lesser nighthawk and lincolns sparrows. By the way, where is the lucky hammock, lynns and castillow hammock?
: P.s. Is there anyone who could help me with some of the birds in the Miami area? I might be able to come with my mom and tag along when someone goes birdng, if its not too much. It's a huge favor, but I want to see some of these flycatchers and kingbirds. The only flycatchers ive ever seen are eastern wood pewees, eastern pheobe, eastern kinbird, gray kingbird and great-crested flycatchers. I really need help with them and my vireos.
