Muscovy nesting failure

This spring, the third we have spent here in Miramar, we had no Muscovy Duck chicks on our 10 acre lake. Usually we would have between 3-10 broods in various stages of growth by now. I found four nests on ours and neighboring properties with eggs that failed to hatch. There has been a lot of fighting between males and rearrangement of territories, perhaps because of the death of "El Presidente," the major "alpha" drake that previously lorded over at least 1/4 of the shoreline.

Is this unique to our lake, or has anyone else noticed it? True, I am not concerned about the Muscovy population, but want to be reassured that this is not an indicator of a larger problem.
