John Kellam and I headed down to Marathon after the TAS trip yesterday, stopping first at Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park, where we saw White-crowned Pigeon, Gray Kingbird, Black-whiskered Vireo, Cape May Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Prairie Warbler, Palm Warbler, American Redstart, Ovenbird and Northern Waterthrush. We didn't find any hoped-for Connecticut Warblers, but this is a great place to look for one. A quick stop at Lake Edna on Grassy Key produced Least Terns and a Black-necked Stilt. Many Least Terns, but no Roseate Terns were at the Marathon Government Center. We arrived at Marathon Airport about 7:15, where John O'Neill and Tricia were already waiting. Almost immediately we heard, then saw an Antillean Nighthawk to the east of our position in the airport parking lot. Another was seen to the west. We moved to a position west of the airport terminal, where we were joined by a group just returning from the Dry Tortugas (the Bahama Mockingbird and Black Noddy are still present, they reported). We were all treated to the sights and sounds of an Antillean Nighthawk performing directly over our heads. A Common Nighthawk was also seen and heard.
