An odd radar pattern last night translated into a modest but enjoyable collection of migrant birds.
A couple of Yellow-billed Cuckoos joined about 25 individuals of 9 warbler species (Prairie, Palm, Parula, BT Blue, Blackpoll, Cape May, Black-and-white, Redstart, Common Yellowthroat) to keep us amused. A flyover of about a dozen Blue-winged Teal was a surprise.
Two Black-whiskered Vireos chowed down on Gumbo Limbo berries along the service road. The Eastern Screech-Owl popped it's head out for all to see when Brian played a recording. Other summer residents seen included Purple Martin and Chimney Swift. We also saw the usual Matheson birds: White-crowned Pigeon, Pileated Woodpecker, Yellow-chevroned Parakeet, Red-masked Parakeet, Lilac-crowned Parrot, and Hill Myna.
Some of the wintering waxwings continue to linger. They are expected to head north within a couple of weeks.
Although the parrots and flamingos are no longer at Pinecrest Garden (the old Parrot Jungle), it is still a lovely hammock. We saw some of the same birds there as in Matheson, including about 8 individual warblers.
