I hesitate to post but, here it goes...after looking at pictures on the internet of a female western spindalis I feel I had one at Oleta River State Park at about 5:30 pm. I've never seen a female before, therefore my hesitation. It was at the edge of a group of mixed warblers making a constant soft sip call(reminded me of a titmouse or chickadee's soft one note call) It was all gray with maybe the slightest wash of yellowish-green where the wing meets the belly. A greyish-black (stouter than a warbler, yet pointed) bill. A lighter grey band from the bill through the eye and a lighter grey malar stripe. I could not see the small white patch on the wing, the belly feathers were coming up the sides quite a bit. It was kind of secretive staying 2-7 feet off the ground. It ate berries. It was flying between a small fruiting ficus and a black fruiting shrub. When you enter the park south off 826 take the first dirt road towards the cabins. Then take the first dirt road to the right off of that. There is a red fire hydrant there. Keep going straight (you'll pass a few turnoffs)until you come to T at a paved bike path. There's a small 10' ficus directly in front of you. It was in here and mostly to the left about 20ft in the fruiting shrub. Today I also got my life mangrove cuckoo further into the park off the bike path near the plaground. Atala butterflies everywhere. - vicki rothman
