There's no such thing as starling-proof plans, but I have found that hinging the bottom of the box makes it easier to "evict" uninvited guests such as starlings, squirrels, and 'possums. The bottom should be held shut by a regular hook and eye-bolt latch, or something similar, for quick release. This is our 9th year of having a screech owl nest box in our yard in Suniland and we have had both grey and red phase owls successfully breed each year but one...sometimes more than one brood per season. There's one in there right now. For whatever reason, we have had few problems with the above "varmints" but have had honey bees take over the box on a few occasions. We went with it and once were rewarded with some really great honey, after one of the hives fell to the ground under its own weight.
