Today I explored the interior of Southern Glades Wildlife and Environmental Area, biking the Southern Glades Trail with my good friends Nancy and Bruce Moreland. The trail, which follows the C-111 canal to Manatee Bay, begins at the parking area on CR 9336 (the Vermilion Flycatcher spot from a couple of winters back). We biked from there to where the canal crosses under US 1, a round trip of about 25 miles. Like just about everywhere else in south Florida at the moment, bird numbers along the route were low. Tallied were the following:

Pied-billed Grebe
Double-crested Cormorant
Anhinga
Great Blue Heron
Great Egret
Little Blue Heron
Tricolored Heron
White Ibis
Wood Stork
Black Vulture
Turkey Vulture
Osprey
Red-shouldered Hawk
Killdeer
Black-necked Stilt
Greater Yellowlegs
Eurasian Collared Dove
Mourning Dove
Great Crested Flycatcher
Eastern Kingbird (fots)
Blue Jay
American Crow
Purple Martin
Gray Catbird
Northern Mockingbird
European Starling
Common Myna
Palm Warbler
Common Yellowthroat
Northern Cardinal
Red-winged Blackbird
Eastern Meadowlark
Common Grackle
Boat-tailed Grackle
