Questions about small birds @ Royal Palm + breeding egrets

At the Royal Palm Visitors Center, there are often small brown & white birds, kind of shaped like stealth bombers (a triangle shape). They become particularly active at sunset, and can be seen swooping around feeding on insects. I've looked through my bird books several times and can't ID this bird.

[I'm a beginner, which is painfully obvious I'm sure :)]

Also, while visiting the Wild Bird Center in the Keys a couple of weeks ago, I was excited to see a great egret with breeding plumage and green lore around its eyes. Do both sexes of the breeding pair get these characteristics, or just one? I've googled and searched, but haven't been able to find the answer. Thanks for your help.
