With the continuing dry weather the water level in Water Conservation Area 2-B has dropped to a level where waders and other wetland birds are beginning to concentrate in the southeast corner adjacent to Markham Park in Broward County. The highlights of a visit there this morning were over 60 Purple Swamphens, about 200 American White Pelican (the first I ve seen in Broward County), 5 Snail Kites, a Peregrine Falcon, and hundreds of large wading birds. Most of the larger birds were at least a quarter mile out but the Swamphens and Kites were closer. If the normal dry season continues birds should become more numerous and concentrated nearer to the south levee over the coming weeks.

Here is a tally of the birds seen this morning from the levee within a half mile north and three quarter of a mile west of the southeast corner of WCA 2-B.
