Actually Arizona and New Mexico have some great birds in the summer. I have been to numerous places in these states both in the winter and spring ( southern parts in the winter) and have seen lots of hummers, etc. Southwest US is the best place to see hummers in the summer if you want to stay in the US.Of course there's also the Saguaro areas where you can see woodpeckers,thrashers, cactus wrens to name a few.
There are also several places in southern Arizona where you could see an elegant trogon ( such as the Chiracua mountains) in the spring-summer.
