Saw my first Solitary Sandpiper of the season in a pond at the Glenn Curtiss Mansion on Deer Run in Miami Springs on Sunday, February 25, 2007. Glenn Curtiss, the Founding Father of Miami Springs (Country Club Estates) is the noted aviator that held Pilot License No. 1, and owned Curtiss-Wright Aviation, which manufatured the Curtiss Jenny bi-plane of World War I vintage. The sandpiper shows up at this pond about this time every year. Some winter in South Florida, but it is possible that it may be an early migrant. The same day, Keith Archbald from Logan, Utah and I saw six different Aratinga parakeets (ie. Red-masked, Mitred, Red-fronted (wagleri), Crimson-fronted (finschi), Green and White-eyed) Monk Parakeets, Yellow-chevroned Parkeets, and Red-fronted and Orange-winged Parrots, White-winged Doves and Painted Buntings in Miami Springs. Also saw Red-whiskered Bulbul in Kendall, Chestnut-fronted Macaws,Short-tailed Hawk and Eastern Screech Owl in South Miami, Hill Mynah at Matheson Hammock and Bronzed Cowbirds and Common Mynahs in Hialeah and White-winged Parakeets in Miami Shores. Smoked Wahoo and Yuenglings slaked our appetites and thirst after all that fun. Life is good.......................
