Broad-winged Hawk- Miami Shores

While playing soccer about a week ago at the Miami Shores Recreation Center, I saw a Broad-winged Hawk flying across the field. The bird was too small and had no dihedral (which eliminates Short-tailed Hawk).

I also saw a Purple Martin flying around Miami Shores not too long ago. Cedar Waxwings and Yellow-rumped Warblers are out and about in good numbers, and Northern Parulas have been singing in the oaks in the yard. Start getting ready to say good bye to some of the winter birds, since many kestrals, gnatcatchers, robins, and Yellow-rumps leave in March.

By the way, a couple of you have asked which schools I have been accepted to. Well, I got my first letter today, and its the good one (the acceptance variety). It is to University of West Florida in Pensacola. I plan on studying Biology, where I hope to study birds and reptiles in the future. How "birdy" the area is will play little role on my decisions, but it will be in the back of my mind if it comes down to it. For instance, are the winter passerines in the Panhandle better than the sea birds of Jacksonville (home to UNF)?

I'll let you guys know...
