A dozen birders joined me for yesterday's carpool trip from Miami to Marco Island via Tamiami Trail. During a quick stop at the abandoned airboat concession one mile west of Shark Valley, we spotted a single Snail Kite. Good numbers of waders, including several Black-crowned Night-Herons, were seen along Tamiami Trail as we made our way through Big Cypress National Preserve. We stopped to view a small flock of Roseate Spoonbills on the south side of Tamiami Trail in Ten Thousand Islands Aquatic Preserve. Also seen there were Mottled Duck, Blue-winged Teal, Glossy Ibis, both yellowlegs, Least Sandpiper, Long-billed Dowitcher and Wilson Snipe. This was also the location where Trey Mitchell photographed Paul Bithorn as he demonstrated his ability to multitask.

At Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk, Fakahatchee Strand Preserve State Park, we met up with Roberta Martin, Mike Owens and their group from Collier Audubon. Highlights from this location included Bald Eagle (on nest), Pileated Woodpecker, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Northern Parula (singing), Worm-eating Warbler, Ovenbird and Northern Waterthrush. A Hooded Warbler and Louisiana Waterthrush were seen by others, just before our group arrived at the end of the boardwalk.

No Burrowing Owls were visible at any of the marked burrows we passed on Marco Island. After lunch at Tigertail Beach, we hit the beach in search of shorebirds, etc. Among the species seen there were Red-breasted Merganser, Reddish Egret and Red Knot. No Snowy Plovers could be found, nor did we see any of the larger shorebirds such as American Oystercatcher, Whimbrel or Marbled Godwit.

We failed to find any Bronzed Cowbirds at Eagle Lakes Community Park. Our final stop on our way back to Miami was Kirby Storter Wayside in Big Cypress National Preserve, where we saw Tufted Titmouse, Great Crested Flycatcher, etc. We failed to relocate the Louisiana Waterthrush that was seen earlier in the day by a couple that joined us from Utah.
