BIG Common Myna roost

Good evening,

I recently heard about a roost of _400_ Common Mynas at the State Farmer s Market in Florida City. The roost was discovered -- and presumably is being monitored -- by USDA employees who probably are wondering about the myna's potential for depredating crops.

A roost of 400 COMYs is by far the largest single number of mynas ever reported in Florida.

I don't want to sound like a broken record, so I won't dwell on the attempted COMY surveys of the past other than to mention my post from last year and to mention that we are coming into the 2007 myna breeding season. But I will point out that if there are even only two other COMY roosts of similar size in Florida, and if all three of these roosts could be surveyed a few times simultaneously (to prove that different birds use different roosts), then those observations alone would go a long way in convincing members of the state and continental bird records committees that the COMY is an established species that deserves to be added to the official lists of Florida and the ABA Area.

On the other hand, the Farmer's Market roost may be the only substantial roost in Florida, in which case surveys along the lines mentioned in my March 2006 TAS post would be needed to document the establishemnt of COMYs in Florida.

Best regards,
