I went to see the Great Horned Owl at Tree Tops, but was confused by the mention of a hill to climb in earlier instructions. There is no hill. From the Visitor Center take the Pine Island Ridge trail through the gate, past a kiosk and to a sign with some butterflies. A few paces past this sign look left and there are two large oaks. The second tree has Virginia Creeper on the trunk. The nest is in this tree, a little over half way up in the center. (Behind the trees is a house with a barbeque and a child's basketball hoop.)
As I was walking back, a Pileated Woodpecker landed not ten feet away and at eye level and started tearing up a tree for ants. Talk about tame. Even the walkers and dogs didn't scare it off.
