I found an intensely colored male Western Spindalis (black-backed) today in Bill Baggs Cape Florida SP at 8:45 AM. It was gleaning insects but after 3-4 minutes, a walker talking loudly on a cell phone dispersed and quieted the birds. I wasn't able to relocate the spinner. It was vocalizing with medium-loud, insistent "tsee, tsee, tsee."

From No Name Harbor parking lot, walk east and enter the Nature Trail. After ~225 yards, there will be a ficus (Strangler Fig) on the east (left) side of trail and a large Green Buttonwood on the west (right). If you pass a burned Cabbage Palm, you have gone too far.

If it's the same bird I found earlier this season on the east side of the park, it's molted and is looking quite snappy.
