American Oystercatcher isn't a bird I see every day, but there were four of them yesterday (Feb. 3) feeding on an exposed oyster bar near the Calusa shell mounds at the Turner River mouth. All the expected birds were abundant along the whole 8.5-mile course of the Turner, from the headwaters along Tamiami Trail down to Chokoloskee Island. This entire 5-hour float afforded views of Florida wilderness much as it looked to the Spanish explorers (except for the trailer homes on Chokoloskee). The white water lilies on the upper reaches of the river were abundant and amazingly beautiful.
