This morning I participated in the US Fish and Wildlife Service Piping Plover Survey that is conducted every 5 years. My area of Crandon Beach produced 31 Piping Plovers, none with leg bands. Other shorebirds: Semipalmated, Black-bellied,and Wilsons Plovers, Dunlin, Sanderling, Least Sandpiper, Ruddy Turnstone, Willet and dowitcher species. There were no Piping Plovers on Virginia Key Beach nor along the Rickenbacker Causeway shoreline.
