We took a day trip to Sanibel yesterday after the glowing post here earlier this week.
After being horrified at all the building going on in Ft Myers it was nice to decompress at Ding Darling.
The masses of reddish egrets were an absolute delight but were out shined by the flock of redheaded (breasted?) mergansers that were chasing fish in the rapidly departing waters of low tide.
They looked like submarines as they plowed thru the water chasing fish and fighting to lead the pack. It was way cool.
A prairie warbler posed nicely as did a mangrove skipper (for you Leppy ones).
There were also quite a few raccoons "fishing the flats".
On the road to Algiers beach to look for snowy plovers that were reported there (never found them), came across a pair of pileated woodpeckers eying a potential nest cavity in a power pole.
On the way back home , just at sunset ,we came across a group cars pulled over on the trail near a nice ponded area west of 29.
There was a flock of the most beautiful spoonbills I have seen in a long time. the picture does not do them justice.
leaving the spoonies , we soon came upon a huge flock of white pelicans with a long line of white birds (egrets ) flying overhead . It was a great end to a long day.
