You'd think that living about 10 miles from the famed Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary here in Naples that I'd bird there all of the time. Truth is, I don't like the crowds of people that can be on the boardwalk in winter so I tend to go there in the "off season." Besides which, I can usually find the vast majority of the birds I see there somewhere else in Collier County. Today, I went to Corkscrew in search of adding a few species to my Collier County Big Year list. I spent about three hours there just as the fog was dissipating. My target birds were Ovenbird, which from past experience I knew would be by the feeders where the Painted Buntings usually show themselves, and Barred owl. If I were really lucky, I'd find a Purple Gallinule or possibly a Wood Duck or two. To make a long story short, I did find the Ovenbird, right where I'd seen it in the past, but I dipped on the Wood Duck, the Barred Owl and the Purple Gallinule, although I'd heard that one of the latter species was seen by someone else. However, I managed to find an Orange-crowned Warbler to add to my Collier County Big Year list so I was happy with that. My Collier County Big Year total as of today, 01/19/2007, now stands at 135.
