Finally able to get out of the house to do some herping and birding. That means trying to find snakes and birds at the same time, using a snake hook and a pair of binoculars. We went up to the agricultural fields of Palm Beach and Hendry Counties in search of snakes, but of course I had my binoculars handy. Here are some worthy sightings:
Yellow-crowned Night-heron
Red-tailed Hawk- about ten
Red-shouldered Hawk- about fifteen
Cooper's Hawk- two
Northern Harrier- at least sixty!
American Kestrel- at least thirty
Scissor-tailed Flycatcher- between Belle Glade and South Bay
Northern Rough-winged Swallows
Tree Swallow
Cave Swallow- appeared to be Mexican subspecies
Barn Swallow- adult, and I had very nice looks as it flew around levee between South Bay and Clewiston. No pictures...
American Robin- two large flocks and several individuals at several stops
Marsh Wren- Holeyland Road
Cedar Waxwing- three in Broward near Everglades Holiday Park
Yellow-rumped Warblers- noted because there were a lot!
Swamp Sparrow
Savannah Sparrow
American Goldfinch- three

And the herps for anyone interested:
Eastern Garter Snake- one
Florida Banded Watersnake- two
Florida Green Watersnake- one
Black Racer- two
Florida Kingsnake- three (The reason I go to the cane fields so often! Finally!)
Florida Cottonmouth

And two Bobcats as well...
Now that I have gotten that snake out of the way I can get back to getting last minute year birds.
Alex
