We apologize for the trouble you are having trying to enter Castellow Hammock. You are indeed correct, all Miami Dade County Parks are open from sunrise to sunset, but park gates open and close at various times depending on the park. We try to open the gates at Castellow Hammock at 8:00am and we close them around 4:30pm. If you visit the park when the gates are
closed you can park along the fence to the south of the entrance. The No Parking sign has been removed. We are also currently making more signs for the park and two signs will be posted at the entrance; one stating walk in visitors are welcome from sunrise to sunset and one stating Castellow Hammock Parking. We have two employees at Castellow Hammock, the Park Manager Roger Hammer and Recreation Specialist Debra Iniguez and please if you have any further concerns or questions you can call us at 305/242-7688 or visit us at the Nature Center. Once again we apologize for any inconvenience.
: I live a few miles from Castellow Hammock, and I've found the park locked up tight every morning and evening for a long time now. Even on a recent Saturday it was locked up between 10 and 11 AM--I parked at the gate (in a clearly marked tow away zone) and walked in, because my 4 year old daughter was so disappointed. Since the County website claims the park is supposed to be open sunrise to sunset, I'm wondering what's the deal? For someone who would like to get in a little birding in the morning or evening before or after work, it's most discouraging.
