Here's a post that I sent to the BRDBRAIN listserv in reply to a similar question that got me booted off that listserv back in November:

On September 24th, 2006, Alan Murray, Ruth Woodall, Roberta & Bill Marten and myself saw 5 of them there. I posted about them on the various listservs. The spent shotgun shells have always bothered me immensely whenever I've been there. It used to be, or at least to me, that there were many more Barn owls at the Miami Canal site. Whether their numbers have dropped due to the hurricanes in recent years that did a number on the old cedars in which they roost or the local yokels using the BAOWs for target practice, I cannot say. I once met a Florida Fish & Wildlife game warden there and pointed out the spent shotgun shells to him. He said he'd keep an eye on the place but who knows if anything came of that. . . .
