It's not likely a falconer would own a Great Black Hawk, which hunts mangrove crabs for a living. Not too much thrill in the chase.
I had a sighting of a Great Black Hawk in late 1992 at Matheson Hammock (witnessed by Juan Villamil). It was soaring in a kettle of vultures, very high. I think this could well have been a different bird than the one at Key Biscayne, which has been pretty sedentary over the years and never been seen soaring, to my knowledge. This was just after the "100 Year Storm," and I always thought it possible that the storm could have driven one up the Caribbean island chain from, say, Venezuela. Who knows?
