The very shy Great Black-Hawk, occasionally seen on Virginia Key, was seen this afternoon at the edge of Bear Cut Preserve. At 2:30 PM it was perched on a street lamp along the east side of Crandon Boulevard, ~1/3 mile past Crandon Marina and toward the Village.
This bird is the nominate race (urubitinga) of Great Black-Hawk that has white in basal half of tail rather than 2 white bands. We've seen it on 2 previous CBC's and origin is speculative.
