All:

Last month before Thanksgiving, a visiting Ohio birder, Wayne Wauligman, photographed a hummingbird he saw on the grounds of the Conservancy of Southwest Florida here in Naples (Collier County). I was forwarded Wayne's picture by Peter Quasius, President of Collier County Audubon to help ID this bird. I posted about it here:

There are links to these rather "tiny" pix within the above link.

At the time, Wayne thought the hummingbird was a possible Green Violet-ear. I didn't think so and suggested that it might be a Buff-bellied Hummingbird based on what I could make out from the photos. Today, on the Florida RBA, I see that Steve Carbol, Environmental Education Manager at the Conservancy Nature Center refound the bird in the exact same location that Wayne found it several weeks ago i.e. visiting the Firebush in the wildlife gazebo area. It is identified as a Buff-bellied Hummingbird on the RBA. I am confident that this is the same bird found last month. It may stay all winter. The Conservancy of Southwest Florida is located at 1450 Merrihue Dr., Naples, FL. To reach this location from I-75, get off at Exit 107 (Pine Ridge Rd.) and head west past Airport-Pulling Rd. until you reach Goodlette-Frank Rd. Turn left (south) on Goodlette-Frank Rd. past Golden Gate Blvd. and Jungle Larry's Caribbean Gardens until you see the sign for the Conservancy of Southwest Florida on your left at 14th Street North. Merrihue Dr. is reached off of 14th St. North. Ask at the Information Desk for a map and where to find the wildlife gazebo area. Admission to the grounds is $7.50 for adults and $2.00 for children under three. Hours are: M-Sat 9:00am to 4:30pm. For further questions, call the Conservancy of Southwest Florida at (239) 262-0304. Good luck! Let's hope someone can get some better photos of this bird.
